PRICING EXPLAINED
HOW PRICING WORKS (ARTWORK VALUES):
Shane Townley’s artwork values are determined by year of creation and follow a structured appreciation model. Each painting increases in value by 10% annually, calculated with compound growth, reflecting both the artist’s evolving market presence and the historical significance of earlier works. The prices displayed on 'google shopping' represent the current, real-time value of each piece, taking into account not only the year it was created but also whether the artwork has previously changed hands between collectors, which can further elevate its market value.
EXAMPLE CALCULATION (ARTWORK CREATED AND SOLD IN 2004):
Artwork prices are not determined by time alone. Size, medium, and complexity of the work also play a significant role in the original pricing. Larger works or pieces created with more complex materials—such as mixed media, textured surfaces, or sculptural elements—generally begin with a higher base price than smaller or simpler works.
For example, consider an original painting by Shane Townley created in 2004:
Title: Melting Horizon
Year: 2004
Medium: Mixed media on canvas
Size: 36 in × 48 in
Due to its larger scale and mixed-media technique, the artwork originally sold for $1,500 in 2004.
Using the 10% annual compound appreciation model, the work increases in value each year.
From 2004 to 2025 is 21 years of compounded growth.
Calculation: $1,500 × 1.10²¹ = $11,101.07
CURRENT ESTIMATED VALUE:
An artwork originally priced at $1,500 in 2004 would now have an estimated value of: $11,101 in 2025
This estimate reflects compound appreciation only. The value may increase further if the artwork has documented collector provenance, exhibition history, or secondary market sales. Additionally, the size, medium, and overall significance of the piece remain key factors in determining the initial price and its long-term market trajectory.
ANOTHER RECENT TIME & APPRECITATION EXAMPLE:
A painting created in 2020 originally priced at $7,000 would appreciate by 10% per year, resulting in a current value of approximately $11,273.57 in 2025, based purely on compounded growth — with additional increases possible if the piece has a documented collector history. This structure ensures transparent, consistent, and historically grounded pricing across the entire collection.
Using the 10% annual compounded increase model: $7,000 (2020 value) × 1.10⁵ = $11,273.57
So, a painting priced at $7,000 in 2020 would now be worth approximately: $11,274 in 2025
(based purely on compound appreciation, not including any additional premium for prior collector ownership or provenance)
